Our Story

Formed in 2020, The Lyman’s Red River War Foundation is dedicated to preserving the Lyman’s Wagon Train Battleground, telling the story in context with the surrounding battles of the Red River War (RRW). It was fought over 5 days, September 9 – 14, 1874, on what would become the Ramp Ranch, a recognized Texas Family Heritage Ranch established in 1898. The ranch partnered with the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in 1998, as one of five RRW sites to allow a major archeological expedition which documented over 1,176 artifacts, and produced a traveling museum exhibit. A comprehensive book by THC Archeologist, Brett Cruse, with maps, and supporting materials became the standard for studying and documenting this last “Indian” War, fought in 29 battles and skirmishes across the Staked Plains beginning in late August 1874, and continuing into 1875.

The Foundation is committed to increasing awareness of this culture clash that changed America. We are currently locating and marking the Old Military Trail (and branches), connecting the Lyman site to other important historical events that occurred before, during and after the War. Especially important to us are the nearby fights occurring on September 12, at Buffalo Wallow and Sweetwater Creek, in conjunction with Lyman’s Battle. We are focused on protecting the 350-acre Lyman’s Wagon Train Battle site, developing access, educational tours and comprehensive programming through the THC, the White Deer Land Museum in Pampa and Canadian’s River Valley Pioneer Museum.
